She quickly pulled up the hood of her jacket as she stepped out of the movie theater. Outside was a combination of cold and humid, like after a heavy rainfall. The ground was covered with small puddles of water. The neon lights from the movie theater reflected on the water, creating a kaleidoscope of colors on the puddles. Because it was dark outside, the colors seemed to jump out from the puddles. She purposely stepped on one of the puddles and watched as the colors became distorted. There she stood, entranced by the movement of the reflected colors. Thinking. Staring. Boisterous laughter from behind made her head snap up. She watched a group of teens float past her. She glanced at her watch. 11:00pm. Good, she thought. She still had some time before Tim picked her up. Maybe 45 minutes. Her older brother never left a party before 11. She looked up at the sky as it started to rain. The cold rain drops felt refreshing after the stuffy movie theater. She looked once more at the watery painting at her feet and walked toward the side of the theater. She went to her usual place. The exit door on the side of the theater. She lit her cigarette and leaned against the wet door. She looked out at the street in front her. She took in everything: Every car that flew by, laughter from a group of black kids, the noise of traffic, and the changing traffic light colors. This was her last night in the city. In her city. She lived here all her life and never had known anything else. The noise and lights of the city had put her to sleep and woken her up for the last 17 years. The energy of the city kept her going. Now she was leaving all this behind.
